Gas struts are self-contained pneumatic devices that use compressed nitrogen gas to apply force, allowing for the easy lifting, holding, and lowering of heavy objects like car bonnets, tailgates, and hatches etc.
How Do Gas Struts Work?
Mechanism: They consist of a steel rod attached to a piston, which moves inside a sealed cylinder. The cylinder is filled with compressed nitrogen gas, which provides the lifting force.
Damping: A small amount of oil inside the cylinder acts as a lubricant and provides damping to prevent the strut from slamming open or shut.
How Do I Install and Mount Them?
Orientation Matters: Gas struts should always be mounted with the rod pointing downwards. This ensures that the internal seals are constantly lubricated by the oil inside the cylinder, preventing the seals from drying out and leaking gas.
Installation: Most replacement struts are direct-fit and easy to swap using basic tools (like a small flathead screwdriver to pop off the retaining clips).
How Do I Choose the Right Replacement Struts?
Measurements: Always match the extended length, compressed length, and stroke length of your original strut.
Force (Newtons): Struts are rated in Newtons (N). You can generally find this rating printed on the body of your old strut (e.g., 500N).
Duration: Gas struts typically last between 1 to 10 years, depending on frequency of use and environmental exposure.
Failure Signs: If your tailgate begins to sag, fails to stay up in cold weather, or requires manual assistance to lift, the pressurised gas has likely leaked, and the strut needs to be replaced.
Could you tell me what application you are working on (e.g., a car tailgate, a caravan bed frame, or a cabinet) and whether you have existing part numbers? I can help you find the exact replacements or force calculations you need.
